During the 2004 presidential campaign, I had the opportunity to be part of John Kerry's press corps for the five months leading up the the election. They were five of the hardest and most incredible months of my life, and I fell in love with this gorgeous, confounding and big-hearted country in ways I couln't have predicted. 

  • A proud farmer donated his corn field for a fireworks display following Senator John Kerry's Chippewa County Farm Rally in Bloomer, Wisconsin on July 2, 2004.
  • Senator Kerry held a rally in downtown Manchester, New Hampshire attended by 12,000 suporters just days before the election.
  • Florida residents sitting in the handicapped area show their support for Senators Kerry and Edwards through signage and props during a late-night rally in a packed Coliseum in St. Petersburg, Florida on July 7, 2004.
  • Senators Kerry and Edwards hugged their wives, Teresa Heinz Kerry and Elizabeth Edwards, after accepting the Democratic nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Senator Kerry waved to the waiting crowd as he enterd the stage for an evening rally in Jefferson City, Missouri on August 5, 2004.
  • John Kerry spoke in the pouring rain to a crowd of thousands in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on July 4, 2004.
  • A rapt crowd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa stood for hours in the pouring rain to hear John Kerry speak during a campaign event.
  • At twilight on Friday, July 9, 2004, Senators John Kerry and John Edwards spoke to a crowd of thousands in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • Senator John Kerry deplaned in Orlando, Florida when he arrived for an evening rally on October 18, 2004.
  • Senator John Kerry arrived to a rainy Hanscom Airforce Base in Massachusetts early on June 15, 2004.  On his itinerary for the day were  campaign stops in Philadelphia, Charlestown, and Washington, D.C.
  • Diners were caught in the press corps crossfire when Senator John Kerry stopped at the Red Rooster Cafe in Las Cruces, New Mexico on October 23, 2004.
  • Dozens waited outside of the All Stars Sports Bar and Grill in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the chance to meet Senator John Kerry.
  • These young Kerry supporters from Zanesville, Ohio wore their sparkly dance costumes to a late-night campaign event on July 31, 2004. The eldest had opinions about how best to stand.
  • Senator John Kerry shielded his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, from the 40 MPH wind on the Lake Express, a ferry that took them from Michigan to Wisconsin over Lake Michigan. Teresa was writing a speech on the windy deck, and persisted despite the winds.
  • Senator John Kerry held a rally at Jaycee Park in Las Vegas, Nevada on  October 26, 2004.

  • The audience during a Beloit, Wisconsin campaign event battled boredom and 100 degree heat while waiting for Kerry to speak during a town meeting on August 3, 2004.
  • Senator Kerry balanced on the railroad rails while walking to shake hands with supporters during a campaign stop in Washington, Missouri.
  • President George Bush and Senator John Kerry debated during the third of three presidential debates at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona on October 13, 2004.

  • Senator John Kerry said a quick hello and thank-you to supporters who stood out in the cold wind waiting for the arrival of the campaign motorcade at the Outgamie County Regional Airport in Appleton, Wisconsin.
  • With three days left until the national presidential election, crowds were more rapt and tense than ever.
  • Senator John Kerry's eyes welled with emotion as he conceded the presidential race to George W. Bush in front of a packed Fanieul Hall in downtown Boston on Wednesday, November 3, 2004, the day after the election.
  • After he conceded the presidential election, John Kerry drove back home and back to his role as the junior senator from Massachsetts.
